Chroma is an AI data platform and vector database for storing documents, embeddings, and metadata, then querying them with dense, sparse, hybrid, and full-text search. It is available as open-source self-hosted software and as the managed Chroma Cloud service.
Chroma exposes multiple developer surfaces: HTTP APIs for core database operations, sync, and embeddings; a streamable HTTP MCP server for Package Search; a local/server CLI; and a self-hosted HTTP API surface used by Chroma clients.

Create or log into your Chroma Cloud account via the dashboard signup/login or the Package Search page. For headless/CLI use, create an API key in the Chroma Cloud dashboard, then use it directly or pass it to chroma login --api-key .... The docs state the CLI stores the API key with the selected profile.
